Acne is a common skin diseases experienced by many people. Most people think that acne only happens during teenage years only, but acne can also occur in adults. One of the foods that are the focus of monitoring and research is chocolate. Can chocolate cause acne or worse than that?

There is no evidence that chocolate causes acne or acne triggers. In a study discussed in the Skin Therapy Letter, researchers gave 65 participants an easy breakouts, chocolate bars are enriched with cocoa every day for four months, while another group was given only a placebo that is not enriched with cocoa during the same time period. The result the researchers found no difference between the two groups in terms of acne.

There is no evidence that states the right to eat chocolate cause acne or acne triggers. In fact, according to studies, dark chocolate is a natural source of flavonols, powerful antioxidants. A little dark chocolate every day healthy even for acne sufferers.

The idea that says chocolate causes acne probably comes from the idea that dairy products that contain chocolate may aggravate acne. There is some evidence for this. According to some studies, adolescents who drank more than two servings of milk, including skim milk, have more severe symptoms of acne. The researchers suspect that hormones in milk simulate protein called insulin that alter levels of sex hormones, which aggravate acne by causing the production of more sebum.

Several studies have also shown that eating high-glycemic foods stimulate greater insulin and exacerbate acne symptoms. This makes sense because the acne worse in those with IGF-1 levels are high. IGF levels may be induced by eating too much high-glycemic foods. Eating foods high in fiber, low-glycemic diet may have benefits for people who have acne.

You can breathe easier now if you like chocolate, because chocolate will not make your acne worse. On the other hand, milk and too much high-glycemic foods can trigger acne. To find out what foods trigger your acne, you can prepare a food diary of what you eat for a month, and see if certain foods trigger acne. Then avoid these foods.
